The Tourism sector is a highly developed sector in Lakshadweep. From 1956 to 1962 there were no ships or mechanized boats operating between the Islands and mainland to carry even the local passengers. Tourism grew as an industry in the last thirty to thirty-five years. It was in the year 1962 that a small ship 'M.V. Sea fox' having a capacity to carry just 12 passengers was introduced.
Tourism plays an important role in generating income for the government and the tourism-related industries, creates employment and adds to the overall development of the islands. In 1974, one of the uninhabited islands, Bangaram, was opened for International Tourism. Now, along with SPORTS (Society for promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports), the Bangaram Island Resort is one of the world's best visited resorts. Encouraged by the Bangaram experiment, the Lakshadweep administration has gone ahead with more Tourism promotion on the Islands. Kavaratti, Kadmat, Kalpeni and Minicoy were opened for domestic tourists in 1983.
The domestic tourists are brought by ship and the night stay of the tourists are arranged in such way that they board from the islands before nightfall. They have to ensure to stick by the carrying capacity of the islands and availability of essential items including drinking water. The experiment of day tourism has been found quite successful. International tourists to Bangaram are brought by flight from Kochi to Agatti, the nearest Island to Bangaram which has an Airport. The islands of Lakshadweep are mesmering to the first time visitor and he's bound to return every year to enjoy the pristine natural bounties of the islands and atolls.
The Bangaram Island Resort, the Lakshadweep Institute of Water Sports, Kadmat and the Twenty Bedded Tourist home, Agatti are presently operated by private entrepreneurs on lease. The Twenty Bedded Tourist Home at Minicoy has started functioning. The Twelve Bedded Tourist Home at Kadmat is presently run by Lakshadweep SPORTS . The tourist’s huts in the tourist focal Islands of Kavaratti, Kadmat, Kalpeni and Minicoy are looked after by Lakshadweep SPORTS.
