The area around Hong Kong began as a trading port in the 19th century, and has now developed into a leading financial and tourism centre. It is a special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China. The other is Macau. Hong Kong faces the South China Sea to the east, west and south.
The area consists of Hong Kong Island, Lantau Island, Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories and 260 smaller islands. Hong Kong Island is the second largest but the most populated.
Hong Kong has a long, curvy coastline which is full of bays, rivers and beaches.Hong Kong's most famous natural landmark is the Victoria Harbour. There are ferry services that operate over Victoria Harbour.Hong Kong serves as a port of call for yachts and sailboats. It is also a stop over for yacht races.
